Michael Strahan is responding to the outrage over his stance for the national anthem on Sunday … claiming his hand placement was simply the result of being caught up in the moment.

The Giants’ TV personality released a lengthy video on the matter … vehemently denying he was trying to make a political statement as the “Star Spangled Banner” was played during the Veterans Day-themed “Fox NFL Sunday” broadcast from Naval Base San Diego.

Strahan explained that his deep respect for the military is what actually led to his position … because he was so surprised by the sailors at the event, he didn’t realize that his co-hosts all had their hands on their chests as the anthem played, which, he admitted, panicking himself.

Instead of changing mid-song to match the other guys and risk looking “stupid,” Strahan said it was best to hold his hands respectfully in front of him, which he did.
