Looting reported as rebels advance on DR Congo city

The chaotic scenes are unfolding in Bukov in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, when the M23 rebel group continues in the region.

On Saturday, reports of a sporadic gun and a wide robbery in the city appeared, including at the food depot, and residents leaned in their homes.

From here, there are conflicting reports on whether the rebels who support Ruda have entered in Rwanda after reaching in the region. On Friday, the M23 fighters were confiscated by Kawuma, north of Bukov.

The UN and the European Union expressed concern about the deterioration of the conflict.

The threat of Uganda’s army chief in the attack on the Congolese city caused fighting that the conflict could break out into a wider regional war.

UN Secretary -General Antonio Guteresy said at the African Union summit on Saturday that regional escalation should be avoided “at any cost” and “there was no military decision”.

“Both the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC should be respected,” Gutters continued.

The European Union stated that it was “urgent”, given all the options after the news from Bukov.

“The constant violation of the territorial integrity of the DRC will not be unanswered,” he warned.

The Congolese government accuses Ruanda of the chaos in the region to use its natural resources – Rwanda’s lawsuit has refused.

Hundreds of thousands of people were forced from their homes in recent weeks as a result of advanced insurgent advance.

On Saturday, Bukava Street was deserted when the residents were hiding in their homes.

One woman in the city said that the BBC people avoided going outside when the gun was heard, and the boys had plundered and destroyed shops.

“I have enough food for three days. As a woman I find it difficult to go outside because I can rape me (in marauding or armed groups). We feel abandoned by the authorities.”

The robbery included a depot of the World Food Program in Bukava, which housed 6,800 metric tons of food, UN Secretary of the UN Service said.

Claude Kaling said the theft of supplies will deepen the difficulties faced by those who need. The agency has suspended its activity for several weeks because of the deterioration of the safety situation.

There were conflicting reports on whether the M23 fighters have entered, according to the group, and to what extent.

Two residents of the northern suburb of Bagir said that they saw the rebels on the streets and no sign of fighting.

However, on Saturday, the source of the M23, two officers of the Congolese army and several Bukov residents, reported on Saturday that the rebels had not yet entered the city center.

The capture of Bukov, the city, which estimated the urban population of more than one million people, will represent an unprecedented expansion of the territory under the control of M23 since the last rebels in 2022.

Bukova, bordering on Rwanda, is located on the southern tip of Lake Kiv and is an important transit point for local mineral trade.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the chief of the defense forces of Uganda, General Muhuzi Cainerba, said in the post on X that he would attack the city of Bunny, also in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Cong by igniting fears of a wider conflict.

The threat of Kaineruga, whose father is the President of Uganda, adds concerns that the region risks slipping back into a wider war, reminiscent of conflicts in the 1990s and the 2000s, which killed millions.

Uganda’s military has been supported by the Congolese army since 2021 in the fight against Islamist militants in the East, but UN experts say Uganda also supported the M23 group.
