CAmbridge, MOsachusetts –Harvard raspberryLast Tuesday, the story of “Maked Reading” had a simple headline: “Harvard will fight Trump’s requirements.”
After months of equivalent, when the White House abandoned higher education, the oldest and most powerful university in America suddenly and sharply said “no” the oldest and most reckless president in America. Harvard Trump’s message was short: “The university does not give its independence and not abandon its constitutional rights.” It was a declaration that the virus has passed through the world.
Leading Global Media Lighting, The New York Times Headlined “Harvard’s decision to resist trump is ‘of momentous significance’”-and then ran nearly a dozen in-depth stories in two days, from how and why harvard decided to fight, to Realized the University Would Not Bend to His Will: First, Suspending $ 2.2 Billion in Federal Funds to The University, then Backpedaling, BeFore Shifting to Strip Harvard of Its Tax-Exempt Status As An educational institution.
Trump’s revenge seemed to be not subject to Harvard officials – at least not. But the period of half-life of the history-dug is that Harvard-Gate has already been dubbed-it will probably be short, given the number of fronts for which the Trump administration decided to fight for the first 100 days.
The following months of court fights, and the slow progress of the Supreme Court costumes (where four of the nine judges are Harvard graduates). Tasks, taxes, Elon, China, Europe, inflation, recession, Russia, gas and incision and burning of the wide levels of the federal government have not stopped-and new attacks will certainly take place, and this will be the last heading of the administration.

And this leaves the question: what’s next? Pushing up to and repeatedly to get the university, a progressive teacher and Harvard students face multiple problems, some in support of Harvard, some in the reform.
According to the insiders, the sudden decision of the university would make a matter, there was no plan earlier because the White House directed the list of requirements that are so detailed, so humiliating and so rigidly anti-intellectual that Harvard did not stay unable. (Here is a suspicion that Trump’s requirements were intentionally designed to be rejected, creating the base for more melodrama and hysteria).)
A few months before this week, the Harvard administration was either insanely indecisive, or too ready to succumb to its conservative criticism, accusations of anti -Semitism and the defense of the freedom of expression and the assembly of students.
For example, Claudine Gay Fiasco metastasized after a catastrophic interrogation in Congress into a shocked discovery of alleged anti -Semitism in Harvard. Former President Larry Sammers armed this issue by announcing it in the campus (which had not noticed Harvard’s former Jewish presidents). As the number of deaths took off, the questions about the proportionality of Israel’s reaction to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 and how to differentiate criticism of IDF (and the government’s orders of non -tanyahu) from anti -Semitism and what role we should play, all attracted an experienced discussion.
With his return came a new set of questions that overtook the gas issues. Trump’s high speed, high-scale executive actions during the first weeks left criticism-and not a few of their alleged allies. In Harvard, these first few weeks forced teachers to organize a constantly increasing number of seminars, negotiations, discussions, Kalakvia, mini-conferences and scale on the fact that, frankly, even now, as a bizarre question: will American democracy survive? The conclusions were anxious, signaling the scale of the danger that is yet to come.
However, these dangers have not yet caused the rush of student activity after Trump re -election. The visible signs of students protest were markedly reduced compared to last spring, but it may change. Because movement groups organized such actions as “hands” over the weekend all over the country, and suddenly for many opponents, including progressives, such institutions such as Harvard.
For universities such as Harvard and their institutionalist defenders, there is now a clear path of high road in defense of academic freedom and protection of thought and speech, which, at least, in the abstract form, will support the exact support of the majority in the country. But the details are divided and will not be decided by Harvard, the institute is pushed to Trump and his oligarchic police.
For progressives at Harvard and other universities, the agenda that pre -political ascent of Trump remains – and lacks the open overthrow of the US government, does not disappear. At least, it includes:
- Social identity issues pull races, gender and sexuality;
- Problems of economic distribution regarding wealth and income, education and group deficiencies and privileges;
- Environmental debates that check not only the restriction of the power of nature, but also how to reduce the impact of man on the planet;
- The Global Management Agenda as the Idea of Cute Power in America, as well as the separation of power within and between states, corporations, and regardless of the comprehensive form of government developing in the rest of this century.

In combination, they make up the agenda that needs to be moved with maximum care. In some of these issues, the university will be more conservative than we want, but at this dangerous moment it is important for progressives not to read the contours of the possible.
