Wicked is pretty much a hit at the box office, officially becoming the highest-grossing movie based on a musical ever in the US.

According to estimates, “Wicked” will bring in another $50 million by the end of the weekend … bringing the total expected domestic gross to $263 million.
Obviously, that’s the only factor in the domestic gross… raking in nearly $360 million worldwide since the film opened earlier this month.

Wicked is still behind Les Miserables in the world rankings when it comes to musical films. ($442.7 million) and “Grease” ($396.2 million) … and the great white spot of international musicals, Mamma Mia! $611.2 million.
The film isn’t just about nostalgia… critics are loving the film and it’s expected to create some buzz when voting begins next month.
And, keep in mind, this is only the first part of Wicked, so Universal could be raking in the dough for next year’s second part as well.
The Wicked characters are Dancing Through Life… and the producers are probably swimming through gold like Scrooge McDuck with this one.
