In October 2023, a gas pipeline was laid between Finland and Estonia badly damaged. Finnish officials later said that the cause of the incident was a Chinese container ship.
And German prosecutors are still investigating explosion of Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany in 2022.
There were conspiracy theories surrounding this attack, with unconfirmed rumors that the Ukrainian, Russian, or American governments were behind it.
The latest incident is related to the fiber-optic cable C-Lion1, which connects the capital of Finland, Helsinki, and the German city of Rostock.
Finnish network operator Cinia said all its fiber connections had been cut.
“These kinds of ruptures don’t happen in these waters without outside influence,” a Cinia spokesman told local media.
Samuli Bergstrom, a Finnish government cybersecurity expert, said the outage did not affect internet traffic between the two countries as other cable routes were available.
