The director of the museum of the Dreading Harry Tupan said that the staff was “very shocked” the thefts, which, he said, was the largest incident in his 170-year history.
Police were summoned to the scene after the explosion report at 3:45 local time (4:45 GMT) on Saturday.
Employees conducted a forensic study and considered CCTV personnel during the day.
Police are also investigating a burning vehicle that was found on a nearby road they suspect that it may be related to theft.
“The possible scenario is that the suspects have moved to another vehicle in the immediate vicinity of the fire,” the Dutch police said in a statement.
There were no arrests, but the authorities suspect that many persons were involved. Police called the Global Interpol law enforcement agency to assist in the investigation.
