Father-of-one Payne, 31, has been one of the biggest names in pop music since appearing on The X Factor and shooting to fame with boy band One Direction in the 2010s.
Argentinian authorities investigated Payne last days at CasaSur Hotel.
After the singer’s death, the police found substances in his hotel room, destroyed things and furniture. Hotel staff called 911 twice and told them they had it a guest who took “too much drugs and alcohol”and “wrecking the whole room,” it was previously reported.
on Thursday, Prosecutors said toxicology tests revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his system.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was “multiple trauma” and “internal and external haemorrhage” as a result of a fall from a hotel balcony.
According to prosecutors, medical reports also suggested that Payne may have fallen into a state of semi-consciousness or total unconsciousness.
Prosecutors say this rules out the possibility that Payne acted knowingly or voluntarily, and they conclude that he did not know what he was doing and did not realize it.
In addition, authorities conducted nine raids on homes in Buenos Aires.
They are also continuing to investigate Payne’s broken laptop and other seized devices.
Prosecutors added that they examined more than 800 hours of video footage from security cameras at the hotel and on public roads, and obtained dozens of statements from hotel staff, family members, friends and medical professionals.
The singer’s body was released to his family on Wednesday to return to the UK.
