Donald Trump hits China, Mexico and Canada with sweeping tariffs

“Today’s tariff announcement is necessary for the maintenance of China, Mexico and Canada accountable for their promises to stop the flood of poisonous drugs in the US,” the White House said on Saturday.

Trump posted the truth on his social platform: “This was done through the International Emergency Economic Forces Law (IEEPA) because of the main threat of illegal foreigners and deadly drugs that kill our citizens, including Fentonil.”

In practice, the tariff is an internal tax that is charged on goods when they enter the country, the proportional value of imports.

China has warned from protectionism when Trump’s return to the president restores the threat of a trade war between the two largest economies in the world.

Last month, Deputy Prime Minister Din Suxersian told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland that his country was looking for a “win-win” decision for the tensions of trade and wanted to expand its imports.

Canada and Mexico have said they would respond to tariffs to their own goods with their own measures, as well as seek Washington that they take measures to solve problems about their US borders.

In an attempt to avoid tariffs generally, Ottawa promised to implement $ 1.3 billion ($ 900 million; £ 700 million) new security measures along its US border.

Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudu should address the media on Saturday night.

Tariffs in Canada come into force on Tuesday.

The Canadian Trade House issued a statement before it called the “deeply disturbing decision” of Trump at tariffs.

Tariffs will “immediate and immediate consequences for Canadian and American livelihoods” and “will dramatically increase the cost for all,” the report said.

Having explained why he was aimed at his main trading partners, the White House said the Mexican cartels were responsible for the Fentonil, Metadhetamine and other drug trafficking.

It states that the tariffs in Canada will remain until it “cooperates with the US against drug dealers and border security.”

Finally, it states that “China plays the central role in the fentanyl crisis” with exports of deadly synthetic anesthesia.
