Khan expressed concern that “extreme actions” – such as Tuesday’s declaration of martial law – could be repeated if Yoon remains in office.

“(It) will put the Republic of Korea and its people at great risk,” he said.

He added that his party had learned of plans to put the arrested politicians in a detention center in Gwacheon, a city south of Seoul.

Meanwhile, ruling party lawmaker Cho Geun-tae became the first ruling party lawmaker to publicly express his support for Yoon’s impeachment.

“The choice between siding with the people by suspending the president’s powers or becoming an ally of the forces that imposed martial law is a matter for politicians,” Cho said.

“I hope that all the politicians of the People’s Power will side with the people,” he said.
