President Miley’s office later released a statement outlining his political vision for his foreign policy.
“The country is going through a period of profound changes, and this new phase requires that our diplomatic corps reflect in every decision the values of freedom, sovereignty and individual rights that characterize Western democracies,” the message reads.
The statement said: “Our country is firmly opposed to the Cuban dictatorship and will remain steadfast in advancing a foreign policy that condemns all regimes that commit human rights abuses.”
Observers note that in recent months, quarrels between the president and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have intensified on a number of issues.
Still, Mondino was seen as important to Argentina’s public image abroad, often stepping in to defuse tensions after confrontational statements made by Miley upset other countries.
