Jamie Carragher believes Ange Postecoglou must adapt his style if he is to remain in charge of Tottenham Hotspur following their 4-3 home defeat by Chelsea.
The Australian insisted his side “played well” in the defeat, which saw his side go two goals ahead as Spurs conceded two ill-advised penalties to allow their London rivals to come back.
A second defeat in four days after a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Thursday dropped Tottenham to 11th in the Premier League, seven points behind the top four, and they have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions.
Speaking after the defeat against Chelsea, Postecoglou said Sky Sports“It hurts, it hurts.
“We started really well and then we lost Cristian Romero. Nothing went right for us and we had to adjust before they scored. I thought we had big chances to get the third. The second half was ding-dong and we had a great chance with (Heung-Min) Son. to change our way, then the two penalties on our behalf were not great. we need more discipline.
“We didn’t play well against Bournemouth. They are a good team. We got stuck in key moments and the key moments decided the game.
“When we play our football, we have to keep our discipline. We didn’t need them because the game was balanced. When you play these top teams, those momentum changes can happen quickly.”
But Postecoglou’s comments have alarmed Carragher, who believes the 59-year-old could lose his job if he does not change his attacking style of play.
Indeed, in 53 Premier League games in charge, Tottenham have both scored and conceded in 36 of them (68 per cent), with only Ossie Ardiles’ games having seen a higher ratio of both sides scoring (69 per cent).
Karager told Sky Sports“Ange said how well they’re playing. I can’t imagine any Liverpool manager I’ve played for and we conceded four in one game would say we played well. If you play like this you will get a result like: Manchester City but you’d also have results like this where you’re 2-0 up, I’ve never thought that managers say we play ‘a certain way and we’ll never change’ I think that has started with him: Pep Guardiola Barcelona.
“The idea that wherever they play, they will play their way. But that was the best team I’ve ever seen. Then Pep Guardiola had to change his Manchester City team, which won the leagues every season. putting in full.-Back This idea that you can’t change is alien to me.you do against the team below.
“There’s this idea of playing a clean game and the Tottenham fans are singing ‘We’ve got our Tottenham back’ but you won’t win anything, you won’t challenge.
“I wake up every morning hoping the sun is shining so I can put on some shorts and a t-shirt, but if it’s raining, you put on your coat. You can’t have a clue of how to play it.” If that doesn’t change, he won’t be here next season.”
Redknapp. Spurs should prioritize the Carabao Cup
Spurs are still in the hunt for a trophy under Postecoglou, his side are doing well in the Europa League and look forward to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at home to Manchester United this month. Sky Sports.
They also fully expect to be in the fourth round of the FA Cup after an away game at non-league Tamworth next month.
Postecoglou said in his post-match press conference. “There’s still a lot for us to play for between now and January to make sure we keep performing.
“I still feel like there’s a real belief in what we’re doing in this team and if we keep it up, we’ll turn our season around and hopefully at some point we’ll hit smoother waters just in terms of some of it , what’s happening right now, some of it is self-immolating, but hopefully we can get more consistency.”
Postecoglou insisted earlier this season that he was “always winning” in his second year in charge and Jamie Redknapp believes ending the club’s 16-year trophy drought will be his priority amid an underwhelming league campaign.
Redknapp told Sky Sports“They have to win a trophy, that’s the stick they are beaten with. If they win a trophy this year, it will give them confidence and belief that they can finish in the top four.
“They have to change the history of this club. For too long they have had an attitude of not being successful and disappointing people. Meanwhile, if they win the title, it will give Ange a bit of breathing space.
“They’ve got Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, they can win it. If you look at the recent cup winners, it’s been Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool. It’s more important to win that rounding out the top four.
“The owners may not agree, but it will be great for the fans and the players.”
