Lebanon ceasefire deal extended as initial deadline passes

The initial ceasefire plan announced in late November laid an end to the 14-month conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group “Hezbolla”.

The agreement, signed by the US and France, gave “Hezbolla” 60 days to stop their armed presence in Southern Lebanon and demanded that Israeli forces come out during the same period.

An announcement of the plan, then US President Joe Biden said he was “developed as a constant ceasefire” between the two sides.

But on Friday, two days before the expiration, Israel said some soldiers would remain in the region as the ceasefire agreement “should still be fully implemented by the Lebanese state.”

The White House statement said on Sunday that the deadline was postponed to February 18 and that negotiations on the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after October 7, 2023 will begin.

Thousands of Lebanon residents have returned to cities and villages near the border since the transaction, despite the warnings that the region is still dangerous.

On Sunday, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said 22 people were killed by Israeli soldiers in the area.

The Israeli military said they had made “prevailing shots in several areas” without specifying whether people were injured and detained by several people who claimed to be a “immediate threat”.

The long -standing conflict between Israel and Hizboloi – a fighting, political and social movement that is supported by Iran – became aggravated in September last year. This has led to an intensive Israeli air campaign through Lebanon, ground -to -south and murder of high -ranking Hizbala leaders.

The attack in Lebanon killed about 4,000 people – including many civilians – and more than 1.2 million residents began to move.

The stated target of Israel was to allow to return about 60,000 residents who escaped from the communities in the north due to the Hezbollah attacks and remove the group from the border.

Hezbollah started her campaign the day after Hamas’s attacks on the south of Israel on October 7, 2023, saying he was acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
