There can be few happier disciplines than the history of science: the study of how people made the best of what they had and, generation after generation, created ever-better models of how the world works. We used to call this “progress”, and I wonder why we can’t continue to use the word and accept that its processes are stranger, more complicated and more contradictory than we thought.
