A woman’s wedding ring was found in the rubble after her house was destroyed California wildfires shared a story of hope.
“It was a needle of need, right? It was a ring on a roof, the ceiling, the furniture, the walls and then my ring,” said Victoria DeSantis “Good morning America” in an interview on Monday. “It made my heart happy, for a moment, knowing that I have lost everything. Two jeans and two sweaters, all my childhood memories, all my children’s childhood memories, everything is gone. Not a thing is saved, but I have my ring.’
DeSantis only had seconds to evacuate his Altadena home Eaton Fire it broke out last week. Dry conditions worsened by strong winds at the time, she said she applied the lotion constantly, causing her rings to slip.
Deciding she didn’t want to look for them in the dark, she left them by the front door next to the keys. At 03:45 in the morning, the alarms went off, and he had to evacuate.
Her husband and son were out of town, so she ran away with her daughter and dog, leaving her wedding and engagement rings behind. In the chaos, he said nothing else mattered.
“As I get my daughter and my dog in the car safely and away from this disaster,” he explained. “And we saw embers flying in the air. We saw patches of grass on fire in the street, a house on fire. “This is not good. This is not good.”
When she told her husband she forgot the rings, he then reassured her, “It’s okay. Don’t worry. We’ll get you another one. It’s okay.”
When he returned, his home of 20 years was in ruins.
While searching through the wreckage, she found her melted engagement ring, but assumed her wedding band had been lost in the fire.
However, a firefighter searching through the rubble with her found her wedding band, miraculously untouched by the flames.
“You keep hope, don’t you?” DeSantis said. “As you’re driving, you see a house that’s fine, and that house that’s fine, and you say, ‘come on, blue house. You can do it. You’re tough.'” But my entire block is gone. And we found this, like a platinum thing. I’m so glad I found it.”
She later sent a photo of the ring to her husband, who joked, “Now you’re definitely stuck with me. It’s like you thought you’d get away without a ring. He said, ‘No, you’re definitely stuck with me.’
He continued: “We’re all trying to find the humor in this. You know, it’s just those light moments that you have to have because there’s literally a house on fire behind you. We’re safe. We’re still here. . We’ve got nothing else. We’re together.
