What is the Congress Library?

from Staff

The recent dismissal of Dr. Carla Hayden, the 14th Congress Librarian, attracted renewed attention to the Congress Library -but what exactly is the library of Congress and why does it matter?

The Congress Librarian leads the institution and has been appointed for a 10-year term. Hayden, who plays the role by May 2025, was a remarkable figure in Loc history. She was the first woman and the first African American to lead the institution, and her term focuses on:

  • Expanding digital access to collections.
  • Increasing public work and education.
  • Encouraging justice and inclusion in library services.

Its sharp removal from the Trump administration has sparked fears among teachers, librarians and civic defenders about the independence of institutions such as the Congress Library.
