Experts have called ghost guns the nation’s fastest-growing gun safety problem. They began to be used more and more often in loud pictures.
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), law enforcement agencies recovered 20,000 suspected ghost guns during criminal investigations in 2022, a tenfold increase from 2016.
Authorities say without the serial numbers on their frames, it’s nearly impossible to track down dealers who illegally sell these weapons to minors or people without licenses.
The former government official doubted that killing Mr. Thompson would change people’s minds. “Ghost weapons are a new factor in a very difficult and violent country,” Juliet Kayem told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
America has had a “very hard time” restricting firearms, said Ms. Kayem, a former assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Homeland Security.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 48,000 people will be killed by firearms in the United States in 2022.
