There is a long-standing precedent for US presidents on both sides of the political divide to pardon – including people close to them. This is the 26th pardon from Bidena democrat
In 2020 TrumpRepublican, pardoned Charles Kushner, father-in-law of his daughter Ivanka. Kushner was sentenced to two years in prison in 2004 on charges including tax evasion, campaign finance crimes and witness tampering.
And in 2001 Bill Clintonpardoned his younger half-brother, Roger Clinton, for a cocaine-related crime dating back to 1985.
In both cases, persons who had already served their sentences were pardoned. President Biden’s intervention in his son’s case came before the sentencing.
In his four years in the White House, Trump has pardoned 237 people, according to the Pew Research Center, including 143 pardons and 94 commuted sentences. Many were in turmoil before he left office.
This is much less than its predecessor Barack Obamawho issued 1,927 pardons during his eight-year tenure, according to Pew. There were 1,715 commutations and 212 pardons.
