Joanna Moncrieff was a “precocious 14-year-old” when she experienced “a period of what might be called depression.” He did not seek treatment, however. “I didn’t want to take anything that would prevent me from reading my philosophy books.” Fortunately, she changed schools, met a “handsome boyfriend” and was happy again. “I hope my resistance was colored by the general stoicism of my parents,” he writes in his new book: Chemically Imbalanced: Making and busting the myth of serotonin.
