UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting suspect’s movements: A timeline of before, during, after the shooting

Unknown male suspect Firing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson remains at large after the shooting outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

Police described the killing as “brave, targeted” and “premeditated”.

Here is a timeline the whereabouts of the suspect Before, during and after Wednesday morning’s shooting:

December 4th at 5 am

At 5 a.m., nearly two hours before the shooting, the suspect was seen on surveillance footage outside a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, holding what appeared to be an electric bicycle battery.

The footage, presumably taken at the time, shows the suspect in the lobby of the HI New York City Hostel on West 103rd Street on the Upper West Side, according to the NYPD.

The New York Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying this person wanted for questioning in connection with the December 4, 2024, murder of a Midtown Manhattan CEO.

At 6:15 a.m., surveillance footage reviewed by police shows someone who appears suspicious exiting the 57th Street subway station near the crime scene, police sources told ABC News.

Before the shooting, the suspect is seen at a Starbucks. The exact time is not clear.

The suspect was apparently walking past a parking lot on West 54th Street at 6:29 a.m. — across the street, about 50 yards from the scene of the shooting.

At 6:44 a.m., the masked gunman shot Brian Thompson in front of the north entrance of the Hilton Midtown in New York.

“The shooter then walks up to the victim and continues to shoot,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. “The gun seems to be malfunctioning as it clears the jam and starts firing again.”

The gunman fled on foot into an alley, where a phone believed to be linked to the suspect was later recovered, police sources said.

Unknown time

The suspect fled northbound on the bicycle and headed toward Central Park, police said.
