But the proposal is very theoretical. As Zelensky noted, no one has made such a proposal yet.
It is highly doubtful that NATO would ever consider such a move.
“Ukraine has never considered such a proposal, because no one officially offered it to us,” said Zelensky.
According to him, NATO should offer membership to the entire country, including those parts that are currently under Russian control.
“You cannot invite (invite) only one part of the country,” the president said, according to a translation provided by Sky News. “Why? Because in this way you would admit that Ukraine is only that territory of Ukraine, and the other is Russia.”
Many people proposed a cease-fire, he said, but without a mechanism to prevent Russia from attacking again, a cease-fire was simply too dangerous.
Only NATO membership, he said, can provide such a guarantee.
The President of Ukraine has already stated that, in his opinion, the war may end next year if Ukraine’s allies show sufficient determination.
The so-called West German model (NATO membership offered to a divided country) has reportedly been under discussion in Western circles for more than a year.
But there were no official proposals yet.
It should also be noted that so far Russian President Vladimir Putin has given absolutely no indication that he has completely abandoned his desire to subjugate Ukraine.
The idea that he would be willing to allow any part of Ukraine to join NATO is unthinkable at the moment.
All indications so far are that any NATO involvement is completely inappropriate.
