Oleksandr Usyk is a “tactical genius” who could pull off a stunning win over Tyson Fury in their rematch, says Dillian Whyte.
Fury can avenge the first loss of his professional record in a rematch with “Usik” in Saudi Arabia on December 21, live. Sky Sports box office.
The British heavyweight star received a solid ninth-round countout in his points defeat in May, and former rival White believes Fury could even pull off a shock knockout loss to Usyk.
“In heavyweight boxing, you’re always one punch away,” White said Sky Sports.
“He caught him pretty well, in some parts of the world they would have stopped that fight.
“But because of Fury’s nature and the fact that he gets up and can keep going, that’s why they didn’t stop him. But I think Usyk can stop him ).
“Fury put Usyk in a lot of trouble a few minutes ago. It just shows that Usyk is growing in the heavyweight division and he’s a lot stronger, he’s hitting a lot harder and he’s a lot more aggressive.
“Fury must be very careful in the second leg, very, very careful.”
Fury has already proven his prowess in rematches with dominant rematch wins over John McDermott, Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder.
White claims Fury can get revenge against the undefeated Usyk in his second fight, but will have to employ the same brutal tactics he used against another former cruiserweight, Steve Cunningham, in 2013.
“History has shown that it’s never against Tyson Fury because he keeps coming back,” White said.
“Every time he is discharged, he comes back and gets better every time.
“It’s like the Deontay Wilder fight, he was better in the second fight, better in the third fight.
“Against John McDermott, he was better in the second fight.
“He seems to be one of those guys, when the pressure increases, he appears.
“For him to beat Usyk, I think he has to use his size. He has to be more aggressive. He can’t be on the back foot because Usyk is a tactical genius.
“He put a lot of pressure on Fury on the front foot, which we’ve never seen him do, so Tyson has to choke him and fight him like he fought Steve Cunningham. I think he has to use that kind of tactics.”
White resumes his career against Ebenezer Tetteh Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar on December 15.
The Brixton man admits he is torn between Usyk and Fury to pick a winner, although he wouldn’t be surprised if his fellow Brit emerged victorious.
“It’s hard to say because if I was a betting man, I’d pick Alexander Usyk,” White said.
“But I know from history and seeing Fury fight and knowing his determination and being in camp with him and fighting with him and seeing him always bounce back.
“It’s hard to go against him because you can’t just write him off, you think he’s done, he’s not coming back, then he just comes back and produces the goods.”
