
The selection of products that hope to slow or reverse aging can be overwhelming

Whether you want to brighten, firm, plump or smooth, there’s an eye cream, neck cream, lip cream, face cream, serum, lotion or capsule available for day or night use. But you should choose one with retinol or ceramides; enriched with green tea extract, marine collagen or pentapeptides? The selection of products, ingredients and regimens can be overwhelming.
One thing many dermatologists agree on is that it pays to keep things simple. “If you don’t have time for anything else, a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen will cover about 90 percent of what your skin needs every day,” she says. Victoria Fuskin care chemist and co-founder Confessions of the Chemista cosmetics company that claims to help consumers decipher skin care ingredients.
Although it is recommended to wash twice a day, it is more important to do it in the evening to remove sweat, oil, pollutants, sunscreen and make-up if you put it on. “The breakdown of these chemicals can trigger a stress response in the skin, so it’s important to get rid of those things,” she says. Emma CraythorneLondon-based dermatologist and skin care company founder Clary. “It’s also important because our skin cells (are constantly being replaced), otherwise you have bits of dead skin stuck to you like scales.”
Expensive cleansers aren’t necessary — a soap-free synthetic detergent, such as a mild cream cleanser, will do, says Craythorne.
