Strasbourg Mayor Jeanne Barseghian told reporters at the scene that there was a collision with a tram, but the cause is unknown.
As BFM TV reports, Barseghyan urged to wait for the results of the investigation.
One eyewitness, named Johan, told the AFP news agency that he saw one of the trams reversing at high speed, adding: “We heard a big bang, a big explosion.”
Another eyewitness told BFM TV that the door of the tram flew off as a result of the impact.
The newspaper reported that a large security perimeter has been installed in front of the station.
The fire and rescue service of the Bas-Rhin region posted on X, urging people to avoid the area so that emergency services can access the area.
The service’s director, Rene Cellier, said some of the non-fatal injuries reported “were mostly injuries” but also included scalp wounds, broken collarbones and dislocated knees.
“There are also about 100 people who have no particular injuries, but are being examined by doctors,” Selje said.
He added that around 50 vehicles and 130 firefighters were sent to the scene and that the situation “could have been much more serious”.
Emmanuel Ano, director of CTS, which is in charge of managing public transport in Strasbourg, said the two tram drivers were “not physically injured but very shocked”.
