The authorities are gradually recovering throughout Sri Lanka after the nationwide shutdown left the buildings, including hospitals that should rely on generators.
Officials say it may take several hours to return electricity across the island, but medical facilities and water purification plants have been prioritized.
Energy Minister Kumar Jacoda reportedly blamed the monkey of causing a decrease in electricity, saying that the animal has made “contact with our network transformer, causing imbalance in the system,” AFP reports.
The Ceylon electricity network (CEB) said the decline in electricity was caused by an emergency at the substation, south of Colombo, and did not provide more information.
