England spinner Charlie Deane says he didn’t realize at first that he had taken a hat-trick amid South Africa’s shock collapse as the tourists set up an ODI decider with victory in Durban.
At Kingsmead on Sunday, Dean dismissed Marizan Kapp off the last ball of the 17th over before dismissing Nadine de Klerk and Sinalo Yafta off the first two balls of the 19th over.
Those wickets came as the Proteas lost five wickets for four runs in 12 balls as England bowled out the hosts for 135 before reaching their target and conceding 26 overs.
Wednesday’s third and final ODI at Potchefstroom, live Sky Sports Cricket from 12pm, now it’s winner-takes-all with a six-wicket win over England in Durban, following South Africa’s victory by the same margin in the series opener in Kimberley last week.
Dean: I am becoming more consistent
“I didn’t even realize I had a hat-trick, so it was great to find out afterwards. It’s pretty cool.
“I’m still learning, I’m still growing, but I think I’m becoming more consistent in how I go about my business.”
Dean is the seventh England cricketer to take an ODI hat-trick, after women’s teammates Carol Hodges and Claire Connor, and in the men’s team, Steven Finn, Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson.
England captain Heather Knight said at the presentation as South Africa were thrashed 72-2 after Dean took Annery Derksen for the first of his four wickets on the day. with.
“I was very close to taking Charlie (Dean) out, so I’m glad I didn’t. I thought he was quite a threat from the distraction.
“We got one wicket and I wanted us to bounce back and get a lot of wickets. That’s how we want to play as a team, to be aggressive and attacking. It was a great effort from the bowling attack.”
How ferocious Filer “sounded the tone”
Derksen and South Africa skipper Laura Wohlwart put on 58 for the hosts’ third wicket and a rebuild was needed after England fast bowler Lauren Filer reduced the Proteas to 14-2.
Filer splashed the stumps of Tazmin Britts and Sune Luus, clearing Luus with a full ball after driving him back with short deliveries, showing once again how important his pace can be when England try to win The Ashes in Australia in January. the
The speedster returned later to clean up tailback Nonkululeko Mlaba and averaged just 74 mph throughout the game.
Knight added: “The bowlers set the tone, particularly Lauren Filer. He is very funny to watch when you are standing up and tripping.
“You always feel something is going to happen and for him to get those two early wickets was really nice.”
