Police chief Vittorio Pisani told reporters that there was a need to “implement tough measures” aimed at preventing risks from “the possible accommodation of dangerous persons and/or persons linked to criminal or terrorist organizations”.
In a circular to local prefectures, he said that at a “sensitive historical moment at the international level” his office “reaffirms the obligation placed on managers of accommodation establishments of any kind or type to verify the identity of guests by visual inspection”.
Pisani said the order was issued in light of “the intensification of the phenomenon of so-called ‘short-term rentals'” as well as “many political, cultural and religious events that are planned”, including the celebration of the Catholic Church’s jubilee in 2025.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri yesterday welcomed the order, which came for the first time from the Interior Ministry, saying it would mean “more effective access control and the first brake on unfair competition”.
