Santorini rocked by more earthquakes as uncertainty grows

On Thursday, Greek officials stated that a state of emergency on the island would be created almost a month until March 3.

Greece-one of the most prone to the earthquake of European countries. Seismologists have said the BBC that it is difficult to predict how much time the recent wave of seismic activity will last and the authorities warn that it could last for weeks.

“It is really unprecedented, we never saw this before (modern) in Greece,” said D -R -Atanasios Ganas, the Scientific Director of the Athens National Observatory.

He said the BBC: “We are in the center of the seismic crisis.”

Those who remained on the island arose fears of potential tsunami. They built improvised protection against bags located along the monolithos beach on the island, where the buildings are very close to the water.

Hospital officers on the island were located in standby mode, while additional ambulances, police officers, soldiers and military vehicles also arrived in Santorini, and the medical staff sent from another Naxos island.

The Prime Minister of Greek Kiriakas Missatakis, who is expected to visit Santorini on Friday, applied an optimistic tone at a meeting of civil defense experts earlier on Wednesday.

“All the plans were implemented. The forces were moved to Santorini and other islands so that we are ready for any event,” he said.

He asked the residents to “remain calm and cooperate with the authorities.”

Santorini is on what is known as the Hellenic Volcanic Dug – the Islands chain created by the volcanoes – but the last major eruption occurred in the 1950s.

The Greek authorities said recent jolts were associated with the tectonic movements of the plates rather than volcanic activities.

Scientists cannot predict the exact terms, size or location of the earthquakes.
