Santorini earthquakes: How long could the ‘seismic crisis’ last?

Experts agree that the island is experiencing the fact that the Prime Minister of Greece called “an extremely and complex geological phenomenon”.

“It is really unprecedented, we never saw the same thing before (modern) in Greece,” says D -Rar Atanasios Ganas, Scientific Director of the Athens National Observatory.

Santorini lies on the Hellenic volcanic arc – the chain of the islands created by the volcanoes.

But recently he has not seen a serious eruption, because not since the 1950s, so the cause of the current crisis is unclear.

Experts say they see a lot of earthquakes in a relatively small area that do not correspond to the sample of the sequence of petroleumprofessional African, says Dr. Ganas.

He said it started with the awakening of the volcano in Santorini last summer. Then in January, a “splash” of seismic activity with recorded smaller earthquakes took place.

This activity grew last week.

Thousands of earthquakes were recorded on Sunday, and the most significant on Wednesday.

“We are in the center of the seismic crisis, ” – said Dr. Gasm.

D -or Margarita Sega from the British Geological Service described the earthquakes that occur every day “in impulses”.

She says that this “Roy -shaped behavior” means that when a more significant earthquake strikes, for example, four quantities, “seismicity increases within one to two hours, and then the system relaxes again.”
