How Premier League darts work Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about the tournament, which you can watch live on Sky Sports from February to May.
The Premier League Darts is an annual PDC tournament established in 2005. It is not one of the seven majors, but is one of six non-rated tournaments.
Meetings take place every Thursday evening between February and May and are held in various locations across the UK, Ireland and Europe, which include Germany and the Netherlands.
Who takes part in Premier League Darts?
The Premier League features eight of the best players in the PDC Order of Merit and are joined by four Planetary Marks selected by the PDC was out of the top 150 with a medal.
The 2025 line-up will be revealed exclusively live on Sky Sports News from 4.30pm on Monday 6 January.
What is the format?
In the 2019 and 2020 seasons, the stars were joined by another “challenge” competing against one of the regulars; John Henderson recalls delighting his home crowd in Aberdeen with a memorable draw against Michael van Gerwen.
Since 2022, the format has changed so that an eight-man knockout bracket is contested each night.
The players each face each other once in Weeks 1-7 and again in Weeks 9-15, and Weeks 8 and 16 are drawn based on the league standings.
How each player performs each night will earn them points which will determine their place in the Premier League table, the points system is as follows:
- Winner: 5 points
- Vice-champion. 3 points
- Two lost semi-finals. 2 points
After Week 16, the top four in the league’s tale compete in the semifinals and finals, with the former playing fourth and the latter playing third.
On the final night at London’s O2 Arena, the semi-finals are played over 19 games and the final over 21 games.
Complex selection process
PDC chief executive Matt Porter admits it will be “difficult” to name names for this year’s tournament as many top players failed to reach the top last year.
He told Sky Sports“We need to look for star quality and people who can perform on the big stage.
“It’s going to be an interesting announcement. We’re certainly not going to please everyone, but we feel we have to make the decisions that are right for the millions of people who will be watching on TV and for the 150,000 who will join us in the big arenas.
“Whatever decision we make, as long as people are talking about it, we made the right decision.”
