Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld lead darts tributes following death of Wayne Mardle’s wife Donna | Darts News

Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have paid tribute to Wayne Mardle’s family following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championships.

Donna Mardle died at the age of 52 earlier this week after a short illness and Sky Sports Darts announced her death during their coverage of the opening day of this year’s competition at Alexandra Palace.

“Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness,” said presenter Emma Paton coverage time.

“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”

The PDC released a short statement following his death, saying: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family following the death of his wife Donna earlier this week.”

The football world was quick to send its condolences on social media, with players past and present and fans sending their wishes of support to Mardle and his family.

16-time world champion Taylor said in X. “So sad to hear of Donna Mardle’s passing. Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family.”

Five-time world champion Van Barneveld added: “Very shocked and saddened to hear of Donna Mardle’s passing this evening. My condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and family.”

Former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting, who is also part of this year’s line-up, wrote:

Steve Beaton, who ended his streak of 33 consecutive World Darts appearances when he failed to qualify, said: “Life is so short. Love you friend.”
