Gael Monfils, Alex de Minaur, Holger Rohn and Jan-Lennard Straff discuss the new player-coach partnership between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Djokovic recently shocked the tennis world by announcing that Murray, his former rival and three-time Grand Slam champion, would be his coach on an initially short-term deal at the Australian Open.
The decision comes months after Djokovic ended his long-term partnership with Goran Ivanisevic in March when the Scot agreed to the role, less than four months after his retirement at the Paris Olympics.
Djokovic is tied with Margaret Court for the most singles titles won by any player at 24 Grand Slams, and the 37-year-old is now aiming for a record 11th title in Melbourne.
Gael Monfils. It’s great for tennis
“I was surprised I didn’t know because I even asked Andy what he wanted to do, and I know he loves tennis, he loves the sport, but somehow we knew he wanted to give something back. tennis, and with Novak it’s a big opportunity for him. start like that,” said the Frenchman.
“I think it’s actually great that Novak gave him a chance. it’s just great for tennis.”
Jan-Lenard Struff. It’s just so nice
“I think it’s amazing,” said Germany’s former number 21. “Andy is such an idol. I think it’s great when I read it , a smile appeared on my face, because. It’s very good and if I were to hire a coach, I would personally like to have Pete Sampras because he plays to the net, serve and forehand, I like his style of play and I would like to learn a lot from him.”
Alex de Minaur. shock the tennis world
“I think the announcement was a complete shock to the tennis world. It’s crazy to see,” said the Australian world number 9.
“The first experience I had of something like that was when I was playing the Laver Cup, when I was playing with Andy, and I was walking on the touchline when Andy was being coached by Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal) and Novak: (Djokovic), so it was one of the most surreal moments of my life to go and play Andy Murray, one of the ‘big four’, my ‘big three’. against and I’m thinking “how many weaknesses and holes are they telling Andy about”, so I can only imagine how that dynamic will go.
“It’s definitely going to be fun to watch and I’ll be following it.”
Holger Roon. I didn’t expect it to be Andy
“It’s an interesting lineup, that’s for sure. I don’t think a lot of us saw that happening. I think it could be good for both of them, so it was natural for him to look for one.” I didn’t expect that it would be someone like Andy,” said the 21-year-old Dane.
“Andy is obviously a super smart player and someone who has beaten him at times. I was wondering why that happened, but they can talk a lot about strategy and beating the best players.
“They both have a very high tennis IQ so I think it will be interesting to see, but I will obviously try to beat them if I play Novak.”
Thanasi Kokkinakis. Andy will do a good job
“There’s not a lot of people who can say a lot to Novak, but if anyone can, it’s Andy, someone who played in the same era and competed against him, so I’m sure he knows some things that , probably thinks they will help. think Andy will do a good job,” said the former Australian Open doubles champion.
