A suspect appeared in court after an attack on a German Christmas market on Friday that killed five people and injured more than 200.
The suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia, has been identified as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who arrived in Germany in 2006 and was recognized as a refugee in 2016.
It comes as German authorities face a growing backlash after an alleged attacker used an ambulance lane to drive into the market.
During Saturday’s visit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, ministers and regional political leaders were criticized by the public, some seemingly outraged by what they criticized as a security breach.
