Trump – who has also threatened Mexico with the same levies – has made it clear they will remain in place until both countries work to secure their shared borders with the US.
After a phone call with Trump, Trudeau held an emergency meeting with Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders on Wednesday about how to manage US-Canada relations.
Canada is one of America’s largest trading partners, and it sends about 75% of all exports to the US.
Trudeau promises to present a united “Team Canada” approach to working with the U.S. to oppose the levy.
Several heads of Canadian provinces criticized Trump’s planassuming they will impose their own tariffs on the US.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also had a phone conversation with Trump this week.
According to US Border Patrol data on migrant encounters, the number of crossings at the US-Canada border is much lower than at the southern border.
During fiscal year 2024, about 23,700 people were detained at the northern land border, while more than 1.53 million people were detained at the southern border.
But Canadian officials have said in recent days that more work needs to be done to improve border security.
