You had to be unhappy on August 14, 2010 to be in the Chinese National Highway. One of the longest traffic over the record is thousands of vehicles in more than 100 kilometers and lasts more than 10 days. The drivers were stuck in five days full of five days. As the days dragged, the sellers rose up on the highway to feed and hydrate people, often for the high fee.
Would you sit in traffic for five days? I strongly suspect that most of us would answer with the most echoed “yes! “Patience fails at times or the other. It probably costs a lot to send much more than a traffic mutter and send it to a spiral failure.
And yet, philosophers, religious wisens and poets take patience as “virtue”. Does that create a long meeting, stroking and complaining line to get reliability or want to join someone when someone drone? Saying that patience is virtue, yes or that you don’t always assume it’s a good thing.

As a behavioral scientist, I think of patience differently. Sure, some people find it easier than others to calm the values of their time. But I am not in that Identify Saints and Sinners, winners and losers in personality lottery. For me, it is much more interesting and useful as something to think patiently commit than something possess-A than virtue. In recent research, I explored what we can learn Recycling as a patience process.
Suppose what it means first. We all know the feeling: his fingers on the lap, in return, almost jumping from our seat, which appears to be the world that appears on that day. In psychology, we call these Tics PsychoTor Agitations.
But why does this frustrating feeling arise? Most emotional researchers take what is known as a functionalistic perspective. Emotions motivate us to do specific things that are good for our survival. Marcel Zeeenberg psychologist psychologist invented the sentence “is to make a feeling“To get to that idea, to make our mind and body to be moving, they are finding a way to find a way around traffic.
Of course, because we have evolved to feel uneasiness not helping us. In cases where we are really stuck and the progress of speedy progress, it is like an annoying child behind, more than a few minutes, “Are we still?” Can distract us from our goals. In negotiationsFor example, there is a recipe for bankruptcy, decided impulses and Sub-results.
In a series of final studies With more than 1,400 participants, my colleagues and I presented people with well-known hypothetical presentations to investigate those who turn on a distress to grind teeth. For example, we asked them to imagine I had to wait in the doctor’s office, to sit in a concert on the way to sit in traffic or withstand a permanent conversation with an annoying colleague. The participants were then answered questions.
During different scenarios, some factors seemed to turn on uneasiness. When the people were more uneasy to see it was very attractive and the wait itself was not at all. It has been delayed for something that is scary, such an event that is an unpleasant job, is easier than your favorite team delay similar to the performance. If you have a comfortable car and a good audio book, it is easier than being stuck in the highway in the summer, without breaking air conditioning and stereo system – where you are going. We also found people who were disgusting when someone was the fault of the delay. Traffic associated with a top morning hour is less bad as bad as a shameless driver (or worse, slow down the look-loos, to see the accident).
In the unpublished tracking studies, we tested a certain prediction of patient, which compares the delays with the expectations of a damaged person. We figured that the duration of the delay did not matter if the person has come. Do you make a 10-hour road trip? No problem. Are you stuck in a 10 hour traffic jam? It’s not fun at all. In an experiment, we told participants to be a tiring task, which basically looks at an empty screen that would last three or five minutes. In all cases, they really took three minutes, but the aggravated only 60 seconds were expected than the participants who worked more than later. Today, other launch research begins, these unrest experiences have all the characteristics of an emotion, such as sadness, boredom, fault or anger.
If uneasiness is emotion, what is patience? In my opinion, patience is our best answer. In technical terms, it is emotional regulation: How we feel is tactics to change, usually to feel and do better. When we take a deep breath instead of catching in front of our spouse, or remind me that the film is not scary, that’s the regulation of emotions.
Patience works in the same way. When we start having problems or difficulties or difficulties, we can feel rage; or we can adjust it. Do you have a long delay at the airport? Move your focus to the new book you brought. Do you wait for you to find out that week? Dip your favorite hobby for a few hours to keep your head away. Are you at the end of your age after a long day of kindergarten? Give yourself a period of time patiently until they are willing to smoke.
I just described the emotion and patience, as a process that calms emotions, it offers a new way for all, including scientists, to think about these concepts. Patiently we don’t know a lot, why some people find it easier than others and how we can improve them. Fortunately, these are simpler questions to answer the challenge when we reduce emotional regulation from the acquisition of virtue.
Eventually, it seems like a contrast to poetic descriptions of the virtue, but I will take practical wisdom for any day.
