“The investigation found no evidence that Kobayashi was trafficked or a victim of foul play,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said.
“She is also not suspected of any criminal activity. In addition, investigators noted that before leaving Maui, Kobayashi expressed a desire to move away from modern communication.’
“We basically did everything we could at this point,” the chief added. “She left the country and is now in another country.”
Ms. Kobayashi went missing on November 8. In the following days, she was spotted in several locations around Los Angeles before disappearing on November 12.
Her family disputes police claims she was deliberately late for a connecting flight and remain concerned for her safety, reports say LA Times, external.
“The lack of communication around some important details has left us feeling left out of potentially important events,” her sister, Sidney Kobayashi, said in a statement, according to the Times.
“However, we remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in its power to help us find Hannah.”
Police said on November 24 that Ms Kabayashi’s father, who had come to California to help with the search, took his own life near the Los Angeles airport.
Ryan Kobayashi, 58, was found dead from multiple blunt force trauma injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
