Vergriete called the incident a “tragedy” and said “a single person killed several people in cold blood” in the area.
Xavier Bertrand, head of the region’s assembly, confirmed on X that five people had died in a “tragic accident”.
French media reported a heavy presence of emergency services near the migrant camp, although it was unclear if the shooting took place in the settlement.
Loon Beach is home to several temporary migrant settlements. It is close to Calais and the Dover Strait, which is the narrowest part of the channel.
Similar camps along the northern coast of France were used by people trying to reach Britain in small boats.
