Voy, who has spent more than two decades as one of the NBA’s most engaged people, shared the news interview With Sports Illustrated Chris MannixHe said he learned of the diagnosis in February after a routine physical blood test showed his PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level was elevated.
Doctors did a biopsy… confirming early stage cancer.
“When you hear ‘cancer,’ you think of it going through your body like Pac-Man,” Voy said.
“Prostate cancer, it usually stays in your prostate and is usually slow growing.”
Voi explained that his current treatment regimen includes quarterly checkups and regular monitoring, as well as improved dietary habits and exercise. Surgery is also a possibility, Voi said.
Although Voy knew about the diagnosis before he retired from his ESPN gig, he says it wasn’t the reason he left Chris Mortensen died from throat cancer at the beginning of the year.
Wojnarowski said he was surprised more ESPN personalities didn’t show up at Ort’s memorial in Arkansas.
“It made me remember that work isn’t everything,” Voy said.
“After all, it will be your family and close friends. And also, nobody gives a damn. It’s just steam.”
Voi, 55, said the money, while significant, was not a “good enough reason” to continue, especially knowing his family wanted him out of the news business.
In fact, Voy told his son. Ben:“People think your job is great. I think your job is bad. Retire and travel with mom.”
While he didn’t fully take his son’s advice, Voy is doing a lot of other things… serving as the GM of the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater.
The team is currently 8-1.
Get well soon, Voy.
