Greece’s coast guard says at least eight people have drowned after a speedboat carrying migrants tried to evade a coast guard patrol in the Aegean Sea.
The coastguard said the boat capsized after the boat’s driver “lost control” in an attempt to evade a Greek patrol vessel.
According to Greek media reports, the boat was traveling at high speed and collided with the side of a Greek coast guard vessel as it tried to escape.
So far, 18 people have been rescued from the sea, the coastguard said, with many of the survivors injured in the incident.
