Representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) have left the COP29 climate talks in Baku after rejecting a $250 billion offer by richer nations to combat the effects of climate change.
“We cannot be expected to accept a text that shows such contempt for our vulnerable people,” the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) group said in a statement.
Their countries are on the front lines of the fight against global warming, and AOSIS has been one of the most vocal groups calling for faster climate action.
Yalchin Rafiev, the lead negotiator from Azerbaijan, said the COP is “pursuing a fair and ambitious outcome” and a “fair and ambitious” financial agreement that takes into account the needs and priorities of developing countries in Baku.
