Dry shampoo has grown in popularity over the years and I can see why. A hair care product that keeps your look clean for a while without washing is a big help! We are lucky to have long days with small children Use the bathroom Washing alone every day is much less…
If you use a product (almost) every day, it’s important that it b) works and b) has safe ingredients! But look at the label on most store-bought dry shampoos and you’ll find ingredients like isobutane, aluminum, and propane… no thanks!
It’s easy to make natural dry shampoo from scratch with just a few simple ingredients on hand. Homemade versions of dry shampoos are 95% cheaper, so not only will you save money, but you won’t. Toxic chemicals On your hair!
How to make your own dry shampoo at home
The basic idea of powder dry shampoo (or wet “dry” shampoo, see the difference below) is to place an oil-absorbing substance, such as baby powder, baking soda, arrowroot, or cornstarch, on oily hair. This removes excess oil, cleanses, and helps keep fine hair looking voluminous.
Baby powder was made from talcum powder (filled with asbestos) until the cancer lawsuits started running rampant. Now baby powder is typically made from GMO corn starch. Neither of these are good options in my book.
I have blonde hair so I only use arrowroot powder and a few drops of oils. If you have light hair, just using these two natural ingredients will do wonders. People with dark hair such as brown hair or dark brown hair can mix it with cocoa powder for a darker color. You can even use cocoa powder Homemade eye shadow.
People with very dark and dark hair may want to try adding in some activated charcoal to darken the mixture. The exact amount you use depends on your hair color.
Bonus: Dry shampoo is great if you style your hair and want it to hold. Dirty hair holds better than hair, but it doesn’t look dirty! In fact, for an upcoming wedding, I’m sporting natural hair that hasn’t been washed in three days (you’re welcome for that look!).
Essential oils for more hair benefits
Essential oils add more than just a nice scent! They also have strong health benefits. Add some rosemary and cedarwood essential oil to help with hair growth. Try tea tree and peppermint for boldness.
Here are the official “recipes” that can be customized for your hair type:
DIY dry shampoo
Use a non-toxic dry shampoo in minutes to absorb natural oils and reduce shampooing time. Perfect for brunettes, brunettes or even dark hair!
Product: 2 oz
-
Makeup brush
-
4-ounce glass jar
-
Place the arrowroot or arrowroot and cocoa powder in a small saucepan. Use 4 TBSP arrowroot for light hair and only 2 TBSP for dark hair.
-
Add essential oil and stir to combine.
-
Apply it to your roots or oily hair with a makeup brush. A brush is optional, but it eliminates the need for curling and is better for curly hair. If you don’t use a brush, brush the powder through your hair and style as usual.
To make a spray that works like a dry shampoo, add 1 cup warm, distilled water and ¼ cup vodka, rubbing alcohol, or witch hazel to the recipe above. Spray on hair or scalp, dry and style as usual. Shake before each use.
Prefer the spray version? As an alternative to aerosol dry shampoos, add some water and rubbing alcohol to the recipe above. Here’s how:
Wet “dry” shampoo option
Wet-dry shampoo uses the same concept but uses an oil-absorbing ingredient in a fast-evaporating liquid such as vodka or rubbing alcohol.
What to do: Mix all the ingredients in a small spray bottle and shake well. Shake before each use and spray on roots or oily hair. Let dry and style as usual.
Bonus tips
- You can use arrowroot or cornstarch as a finishing powder. Homemade makeup or as an oil-absorbing powder on the skin. I keep a mason jar full of bows on my shelf and use it on my hair as a dry shampoo and makeup set.
- If you have dark hair but you don’t want to use cocoa powder, use it as a regular shampoo and use it at night or at least 2 hours before going to bed. You won’t get that fake-gray-looking-wig look after some time to absorb!
