Chernobyl reactor shield hit by Russian drone, Ukraine says

President of the Ukrainian President Ukraineir Zelensky said the Russian attack on the drone has hit a radiation shelter over a damaged reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

At night, the strike struck the shelter of the plant, destroyed the former fourth unit, causing a fire that has since extinguished, he added.

As of Friday morning, the level of radiation at the plant did not increase, Zelensky said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said fire safety and vehicles responded within minutes after the blast overnight. The agency has not been reported, the agency added.

The IAEA, which monitors nuclear safety in the world, noted that the radiation level inside and outside Chernobyl remains normal and stable.

After the incident, the agency remains in the “big vigilant”, and CEO Rafael Marian Gross said that “there is no place for self -promotion.”

Chernobyl is the place of the worst nuclear accident in the world – a catastrophic explosion that in 1986 directed a train of radioactive materials, causing an emergency in the field of healthcare across Europe.

Zelensky placed footage on X, which found damage to a giant shield made of concrete and steel, which covers the remains of the reactor that lost the roof as a result of the explosion.

The shield is designed to prevent further leakage of radioactive material over the next century. It measures 275 million (900 feet) width and 108 m (354 feet) in height and costs $ 1.6 billion (1.3 billion pounds).
