She treats him as a pet, but a month later, no longer small, Wilber is sold to Fern’s uncle, Homer Zuckerman. At Zuckerman Wilbur’s Barnyard, he longed for communion, but was removed from other animals. He befriends a barn spider named Charlotte, whose net sits at the door overlooking Wilber’s enclosure. When Wilber discovers that he was raised for slaughter, she promises to bring out a plan guaranteed to spare his life. Fern often sits on a chair listening to the animal’s conversation, but in the course of history, when it begins to mature, it finds other interests.
