Liverpool have fended off Crystal Palace and Ipswich for winger Ben Doak.

Neither Palace nor Ipswich have come close to Liverpool’s valuation of Doak, who is currently on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough.

The Scotland international is said to be one of Palace’s top targets this month, while Ipswich are currently considering a bid closer to Liverpool’s asking price.

Liverpool have also spurned some strong interest from European sides, with the Reds happy with the 19-year-old’s progress at Boro and they believe he still has a future at Anfield and could eventually play for Arne Slott’s first team.

The 19-year-old was named the EFL Young Player of the Month for December and Liverpool believe he is the best player in the division.

Ten years ago, nine-year-old Ben Doak was playing for Ayr United’s under-11s against Hamilton Academicals.

That day he played in two ‘seven’ games against two Axis teams and scored nine goals.

With Jim Began, Celtic’s chief talent officer, watching, there was little doubt where Doak was headed next.

“I remember seeing Jim on the sidelines and I felt he was there to see Ben because he was doing so well and there was so much buzz around him,” said Liam Anderson, one of Doak’s coaches at Ayr United. . on time.

“That day you think. Hopefully he’s doing well, but not too well. But he was incredible that day.”

A decade after that display, he was roaming the pitch seven past Croatia and Manchester City full-back Josko Guardiola at Hampden Park in Scotland.

A sensational international break last month saw him assist John McGinn in wins against Croatia and Poland. He is now one of the first names on Steve Clarke’s team sheet.

And that’s not all: Doak has become one of the Championship’s most exciting players on loan at Middlesbrough. The goals and assists are flying.

Parent club Liverpool are watching and with doubts over Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at Anfield, Arne Slott may not have to look far for a potential replacement.

“My focus is on the players we have here,” McKenna said. “Of course we’re trying to build the team in this window as every team is and we want to make the team better not only for the second half of the season but also for the long term. So we’re going to: look to do it in the best way possible.

When asked if his team wants to improve on the offensive line, he said: “I think that’s an area we need to add to. It’s an area we wanted to add in the summer window and then of course we missed out.

“We made some good additions at the start of the summer but we still wish we could have added a game or two in the attacking half in the summer and of course George Hirst missed the 19 league games we played.

“It’s a big loss that puts a big burden on Liam Delap as a really young forward. Fortunately, he’s handled that burden well, but we still want to add in different areas of the pitch and we want to add more goals in the attack. : if possible.”
