Banning Foreign Students Is the Opposite of “Making America Great”

How much of our future, our prosperity and our moral leadership are we ready to sacrifice for this catastrophic crusade?

As a person who has formed an educational policy within the federal government for many years, and as a Palestinian-American who made a difficult choice to leave the US Ministry of Education for Baden’s administration to Gaza, I have not seen a narrow political solutions far beyond. Since President Trump has taken the post, his administration not only armed our civil rights laws, trying to suppress students’ activity, but also launched a multi -storey attack on higher universities in our country and their international communities.

The last couple of weeks were only stunning. The Trump administration not only threatened the accreditation of Colombian University in its constant attempts to equip anti -Semitism, but also the president signed a statement to suspension of visas for all foreign Harvard students, and announced great bans on 12 predominantly black, Arabic and/or Muslim countries.

The threat of Colombia’s accreditation status stems from a very predictable authoritarian book. This is not legal effort to combat anti -Semitism; It is a raw power to control, reflecting the ideological goals of the 2025 project and efforts to restrict independence in the academic in other authoritarian absorptions. The compulsion of independent accreditors to punish universities undermines one of the last pillars of our fragile education system. And for this to happen to the university, which has already leaned down from the backlog to the repression of students and teachers, is a vivid warning: the coincidence will not save you.

But these attacks are not just one university or one policy. They are a cold trend, a message that America is no longer a hospitable society. When we begin to treat international students like poker chips in some major political game, we do not just harm them; We harm ourselves. And when approximately half of these students study for graduate school and develops critical examination, more important than when -something we keep and raise this talent, not repel it.

When our government tells the world that our commitment to the free word is conditional, it is important for us to remember that many students come here because they want to study freely. Universities around the world offer sufficient education to become a doctor, lawyer, computer. But in America you should be able to study these skills in a free society, in a library that is not censored, in the class where an open discussion is welcomed.

Welcoming foreign students, not some kind of charity from America. This is a powerful economic driver for our country. International students do not just fill the places in the classes; They pump up Almost 44 billion dollars In our economy and support almost 400,000 jobs – from the professors and staff of the university to people working with local cafes and bookstores near campus. About 80 percent of foreign students At the level of students, they pay a much higher level of study than domestic students, and usually without federal financial assistance. They literally literally bring new money to our country, and studies have shown that they will finish at a higher rate than the overall student population.

Current Issue

Issue of July/August 2025

When the United States becomes less attractive or even hostile, competing peoples are increasingly becoming magnets for international students and researchers. Imagine the future when the next generation of global innovators in critical fields, such as AI, quantum calculations and biotechnology, is mostly concentrated in countries that actively compete with the US. It’s not just “for us” brains “; it’s”Brain profit“To accelerate their innovation, strengthening the economy and potentially changing the global balance of technological and economic force.

In some cases, we see that this brain drain is not just a future risk, but a true reality. Journal Nature recently disclosed A marvelous trend: a mass leap of scientists based in the US is now looking for work abroad in places such as Canada (+41 percent), Europe (+32 percent) and China (+20 percent). At the same time, less international scientists goes to work here. As one of the Australian politics institutes is directly expressed, it is the possibility of increasing the brain in the century. “

Some claim that these politicians have simply released spots for US students. It is dangerously misunderstood how perfection works. We don’t just change one student to another; We reduce the entire highest level talents from which you can draw.

Before Trump, we saw that it was made from previously insufficient regions. A a huge amount International students – 56 percent – are immersed in STEM fields. Think about this: Almost half of our STEM and Master’s graduates are foreign students, and their presence is directly related to increased patent applications at the US universities. They then go to the creation of companies-quarter start-up start-ups of a billion dollars were founded by people who first came here as international students. It is willing to disable this economic and intellectual self -health.

Working on a federal higher education policy for more than ten years, I can say with confidence that the decision is not to create higher walls. This will strengthen our bases. We need to provide a safe, welcoming environment in our campuses for all students of our country. The repressive policies focused on foreign students today will become the policy that all students face. We need clear, fair rules for all students, and we must absolutely push away from any attempts to strangle legitimate discourse, especially if it comes from the place of justice and human rights – the principles that should be universal.

It is not just about figures or politics. It’s about the country we want to be. We are a nation that covers global talent and a vivid exchange of ideas, or one that closes its doors out of fear, fanatical ideology or political expediency, thus strengthening those who cannot share our vision of the world? The path we go leading us from our strengths. The question we all have to ask is: how much our future, our prosperity and our moral leadership are we ready to sacrifice?
