Defending Australian Open champion Yannick Sinner dropped just six games as he dominated home favorite Alex de Minaur in his semi-final clash with big-shot Ben Shelton.
World No. 1 who admitted to struggling in his time fourth round battle with Holger Runcame back in top form to destroy De Minaur’s hopes at Rod Laver Arena with a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 6-1 victory.
Siner produced a ball-striking masterclass to extend his winning streak against the eighth seed from Sydney to 10-0, including the last 20 straight sets.
Shelton survives a four-set, nearly four-hour war of attrition
The sham, the big game, the colorful celebrations were shown as Shelton Defeated Lorenzo Sonego in four sets to reach his second Grand Slam semifinal.
The big-serving American hit his stride at the Australian Open two years ago, making a run to the quarter-finals on his debut before going one better at the US Open.
The tie at Melbourne Park opened up for the 22-year-old and he took full advantage of his recent victory with a 6-4 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-4) win over unseeded Sonego of Italy.
Sonego, ranked 55th and making his first Slam quarter-final, repeatedly attacked the net and threatened to take the contest to a deciding set.
Shelton showed his desire in the fourth set tiebreak by darting across the court to try to get a volley back in. After lying sprawled by the ad pileup, he showed he is still struggling for fitness by clicking.
And moments later, Shelton was roaring with delight after booking a place in the final four.
“Right now I feel relief,” said the left-hander. “Shout out to Lorenzo Sonego because that was some ridiculous tennis. I’m really happy to get my first win at Rod Laver Arena. It’s one of my favorite matches of my career.”
