Early Wednesday morning, a small asteroid crashed into the Earth’s atmosphere and created an impressive bolide in the sky over far eastern Russia.
People from the remote Russian republic of Sakha, in northeastern Siberia, stood in the snow to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon, which astronomers spotted about 12 hours before it arrived, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.
According to ESA, the asteroid had a diameter of about 70 cm and entered the Earth’s atmosphere at 01:15 local time (16:15 GMT).
Sahi’s emergency ministry said officials were put on alert, but no injuries were reported after the asteroid hit.
