On February 1, Adam Azim will meet Sergey Lipines live at OVO Arena Wembley. Sky Sports.
Fast-rising super-lightweight star Azim is ready to step up to the next level as he takes on the former world champion in Lipinets.
Azim’s last fight was an emphatic win over O’Hara Davies at the Copper Box Arena in October. The unbeaten 22-year-old looked at his best as he dictated the action and dominated Davies from the opening bell, dropping the Londoner in the fifth round before ending the fight in impressive fashion in the eighth.
Having previously won and quickly defended the European title with victories over Frank Petijian and Enoch Poulsen, Azim is stepping up to the world stage as he aims to prove he is ready to take on the best in the division.
Lipinets is the former IBF world champion in the super lightweight category. The Kazakhstan-born fighter captured the IBF belt in 2017 with a unanimous decision victory over Akihiro Kondo in downtown Brooklyn.
Since then, the 35-year-old has become one of the top contenders in the featherweight and welterweight divisions, with wins over former world champions Lamont Peterson and Omar Figueroa Jr.
Lipines’ last fight of the year was against Azim’s compatriot and former athlete Robbie Davis Jr. Lipines defeated the British boxer on points in a 10-round thriller, sending Davis Jr. to the canvas once in the fifth inning and twice in the eighth.
Azim said: “This fight is another step for me. I’m looking forward to sharing the ring with a great fighter like Sergey Lipinets. He’s fought some of the biggest names out there.
“I have a lot of respect for him and what he has achieved in the sport, but now is my time. This is an opportunity for me to show that I belong at the world level and that I am ready to face the best.
“Lipinetz has had a great career, but on February 1, he stands in my way. This is the next step on my path, and nothing will stop me from achieving my dreams.”
Lipinets said: “I’m glad Adam took this fight. A lot of top fighters refused to face me. I’ve never turned down a fight and this one made or broke it for me.
“Adam is young and strong, but he doesn’t have my experience. I have seen it all. May the best man win.”
BOXXER founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “This is a big step for Adam and a risky fight for him to take at this stage in his career. At just 22 years old and in his 13th fight, he will be facing a former world champion.
“Sergei Lipinets is a dangerous fighter. There’s no question about it. He’s an accomplished, world-class boxer with devastating punching power.
“But Adam is a special talent. What we’ve seen from him in the ring and what he’s been showing in the gym tells us he’s ready. This is a huge opportunity for him.
“It doesn’t get much bigger than this. Being an iconic place title, keep on living Sky Sportshe has the opportunity to declare himself on the world stage.”
