Nick McMillan Joins ProPublica as Computational Journalist — ProPublica

PROPUBLICA hired Nick McMilan as a computational journalist on our data and news team. In this role, McMillan will use technology and data to find and report stories that are otherwise unattainable.

“Nick has impressive results of the use of advanced technology to unlock reporting ways,” said Ken Schwenk, senior editor according to data and news. “I am happy to use these skills to contain power to account in propublica.”

McMilan comes to PROPBLICA from NPR, where he was a data journalist on the investigation team. In NPR, he combined a report with data analysis, creating tools that turned the unprocessed records into evidence of the investigation. His work included the development of an optical recognition program to disassemble more than 7,000 state work files that helped reveal As a federal program killed thousands of wild animals with little responsibility. It also collaborated with a story showing how power lines are managed by southern California Edison caused new fires when crews fought with existingCreating a tool that has processed and copied more than 2000 hours of the first respondent radio. The stories that McMilan worked on, were recognized across the country with honors, including the Edward National Press Award and the Edward R. Morou Prize.
