By mediaRomanian President Klaus Iohanis resigned after pressure on him to leave because of the restructuring of the presidential election, which were controversially abolished last year.
Voting in December was abolished by the Romanian Supreme Court after allegations of interfering with the Russian state.
Raised by Johanis, Pro-Es Liberal, said he would remain in office until he was selected in May.
But this was strongly criticized by far -right politicians and their supporters who were well in the first round of voting in December.
Their criticism inspired tens of thousands of Romanians to go out on the street last month in protest against the cancellation of the elections.
Opposition legislators again launched a motion in Parliament on Monday to move to the president’s suspension.
In response, Johanis said he would refuse to reduce the restriction of what, he said, would be a “harmful” and separate referendum for the country.
“To deprive Romania and Romanian citizens from the crisis … I resigned as President of Romania,” he said. He said he would officially speak on Wednesday.
