Climate puzzle persists with unexpectedly warm January

The fact that the sea temperature in other regions of the world remains particularly warm, it may indicate that the ocean’s behavior is changing, “according to Samantha Bersez, deputy director of Copernicus.

“We are really looking to learn how the ocean temperature develops because they have a direct effect on the air temperature.”

Another expressed theory is a decrease in the number of small particles in an atmosphere known as aerosol.

These tiny particles have historically masked some long -term warming from greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, helping to form bright clouds and reflecting part of the sun’s energy into space.

For example, the number of aerosols falls, due to the reduction of tiny particles from delivery and the Chinese industry, such as aimed at cleaning the air that people breathe.

But this means that they did not have such a big cooling effect to compensate for further warming caused by greenhouse gases.

And this cooling effect of aerosols was undervalued by the UN, according to James Hansen, a scientist who made one of the first high -profile warnings about climate change in the US Senate in 1988.

Most scientists are not yet convinced that this is the case. But, if true, it may mean that the store has a greater climate change than previously assumed.

“Nightmare scenario,” says Professor SCAIFE, will be an additional cloud feedback if the ocean warming can scatter the low -level reflexive clouds, in turn, warming the planet further.
